Welcome to Sentle (the “Game”), a daily word game available at sentle.app. The Game is operated by Sentle (“we,” “us,” or “Sentle”). By accessing or playing the Game you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use the Game.
1. The Game
Sentle is provided to you free of charge for your personal, non-commercial enjoyment. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Game at any time without notice. We make no guarantee that the Game will always be available, uninterrupted, or error-free.
2. Source texts
The sentences and passages used in the Game are drawn from literary works in the public domain, sourced primarily from Project Gutenberg. Those underlying texts are not owned by us and remain free for anyone to use. Project Gutenberg is a registered trademark of the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation and is not affiliated with, and does not endorse, Sentle.
3. What we own
While the source sentences are public domain, the Game as a whole is an original work. The following are owned by us and protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws:
- The “Sentle” name, logo, wordmark, and overall look, feel, and brand identity;
- The software, source code, and design of the Game;
- All original written content we create — including clues, hints, definitions, glossary entries (“words to know”), learning tips, commentary, and result-screen copy;
- Our selection, curation, arrangement, and presentation of the source texts — i.e. which passages we choose, how we edit and frame them, and how the puzzles are constructed.
Public-domain status applies to the original authors’ words, not to the creative and editorial work we layer on top of them. That layer is ours.
4. What you may do
We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and play the Game for your own enjoyment. You are welcome to share your daily results and screenshots socially.
5. What you may not do
Except with our prior written permission, you agree not to:
- Copy, scrape, harvest, or reproduce our original content (clues, definitions, glossary entries, learning tips, curation, or arrangement), whether manually or by automated means;
- Use our content or data to build, train, or operate a competing or substantially similar product;
- Access the Game through bots, crawlers, or automated systems, or place an unreasonable load on our infrastructure;
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code or underlying databases beyond what your browser does in the ordinary course of play;
- Use the Sentle name, logo, or branding in a way that suggests affiliation, sponsorship, or endorsement without permission;
- Remove or obscure any copyright, trademark, or proprietary notices.
6. Your data and progress
The Game stores limited information to run — for example your puzzle progress and streak, and anonymous, cookie-free usage analytics. We do not sell your personal information. Your recovery code is yours to keep safe; anyone who has it can access the progress saved under it. Our Privacy Policy describes what we handle and how in more detail.
7. Disclaimer of warranties
The Game is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. Definitions and learning tips are provided for general interest and may contain errors.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or any loss of data, arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Game. The Game is a free word game; nothing in it is professional, educational, or other advice you should rely on.
9. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of the Game after changes take effect means you accept the revised Terms.
10. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Victoria, Australia, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located there.
